The scenic life of this Gogol’s comedy had started on the Alexandrinsky Stage precisely 155 years ago. In that original premiere performance the role of Podkolyosin was impersonated by the great Russian actor Alexander Martynov. Since that time, “The Marriage” along with “The Inspector General” had always adorned the billboards of the theater.

Interpretation of Gogol’s plays has always defined the creative tune of the theater troupe and turned into its manifests. The Artistic Director of the Alexandrinsky Stage, Valery Fokin, also addressed “The Marriage” shortly after “The Inspector General.” Gogol’s heritage has been a source of inspiration for Fokin for many years. The current premiere is taking place in advance of the 200th jubilee of the writer.

Valery Fokin is revealing in his performance the acute conflict of the hero striving to preserve his personal world with the getting more and more absurd, nearly carrousel, guise of the reality. This reality provokes a person to accomplish the most unbelievable tricks and participate in awkward amusements as if imposed by devilry. The very history of this simultaneous suiting of six bride grooms after Agafia Tikhonovna Kuperdyagina looks like such an amusement; this merchant’s daughter cannot find a suitable choice enjoying the entire complex of human merits even in her dreams.

The image of this opening alternatively from outside and inside carousel created by a prominent master of scenography Alexander Borovsky stresses the active dynamics of transfers from the world of inner fantasies of the character nestling on a comfortable, almost Oblomov’s style, sofa, into the external unfriendly and unstable world, where the character feels himself extremely unsure.

The performance goes with one intermission. Play Duration 2 h.30 min.

The first night took place on January 18, 2008
